The IOM PASSIM Project supports the Italian Government in the health-related screening and assistance for rescued migrants in the broader framework of the GoI’s search and rescue (SAR) activities.
Since October 2016, the IOM PASSIM Cultural Mediator Teams supported the medical personnel of the Italian Navy Ships for health screenings and assistance to vulnerable groups rescued at sea in the Mediterranean sea. IOM staff provided language and cultural mediation services to Grecale, Bersagliere, Cigala Fulgosi, Bettica Navy Ships, with more than 500 migrants assisted. The project funded by the Italian Ministry of Health (AMIF National Program 2015-2020) started in February 2016 and will proceed until January 2018.
IOM cultural mediators are also specifically trained in addressing special needs of vulnerable groups like women with children, unaccompanied minors, victims of torture and violence. PASSIM teams ensure adequate language mediation in English, French, Arabic, Tigrinya and Somali.
