In the framework of the policies and programmes of the EU and its Member States, IOM in Italy is active in the resettlement of refugees and in the relocation of persons in clear need of international protection from Italy to other EU member states.
Given its experience, IOM has been asked by the Government of Italy and the European Commission to provide support in the relocation of 10,000 asylum seekers over two years. In particular, IOM in Italy will support with the pre-departure assistance of asylum seekers eligible for relocation including through counselling, pre-departure orientation and health assessment (starting date: 2016-2017). IOM is responsible for providing pre-departure assistance services, including medical screening, cultural orientation, language training as well as transportation from point of departure to Italy.
IOM is also responsible for the actual movement of the asylum seekers from Italy to the countries of relocation, accompanying beneficiaries throughout the process from the reception centres in Italy to their final destination. All activities will be run in close collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Interior, EASO, UNHCR and the operators of the reception centers. During the implementation of these activities, IOM ensures close collaboration with all involved Italian Institutions (especially the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies), and other actors.
